History of Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi and its nearby areas came under the old Gandhara civilization. There are many Stupas, Buddhist monasteries, and Temples that have been found in the area. The renowned places in Pindi belong to the old civilization as well as the Hindu, Sikh, and Mughal eras.

The city was invaded numerous times in history in 326 BC, Alexander invaded the area and got control without any battle; at that time, Taxila was considered as the main city. Greeks built a University in Taxila; the remains are still present in Taxila. It is now included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.

Then came Mehmood Ghazni, who brought Islam to this region. In 1497, Gakhars tribes jointly ruled the city for over two centuries with the help of Mughals alliance and military support. When the Mughals started losing their grip on power, Sikhs tried to get control of Rawalpindi. In 1765, they invaded the city and defeated Gakhars, under the rule of the Sikh clan. Rawalpindi started flourishing with new trade routes and business activities, especially to northern areas and Kashmir specifically. In 1849, Sardar Chattar Singh surrendered Rawalpindi to the British Army, and the British Raj started, which lasted for a century until the independence of Pakistan on 14th August 1947.

Britishers also built the Cantt area in Rawalpindi for the “British Indian Army” during 1851. The main reason to build Cantt here was the beautiful landscape and cooling weather conditions. Moreover, they like to stay in Murree, which was developed as a hill station for recreation purposes, because of its snowy weather in winter like London.

Babu Muhallah, Saddar Bazar

After independence, Rawalpindi remained the headquarters of the Pakistan Army till now. Also called ‘GHQ’ in short, this city has significant importance all over Pakistan.

Rawalpindi Paryer Time – Rawalpindi, located in the southern part of Punjab province in Pakistan near the Margalla Hills, experiences harsh summers and cold winters. Prayer times for Fajr, Asr, and Maghrib in Rawalpindi vary throughout the year. For instance, Fajr prayer time is at 3 a.m. in summer and around 6 a.m. in winter. Similarly, school timings adjust to the climate, with schools opening and closing earlier during the hot summer months.

Muslim prayer, known as Salah in Arabic and Namaz in Urdu, is a fundamental pillar of Islam. Muslims are required to perform prayer five times a day. Salah is a profound way to express gratitude to Allah, the Most Merciful, to stand humbly before God, acknowledge one’s shortcomings and sins, and seek forgiveness.

The Importance of Salah

The importance of Salah, or prayer, for Muslims is profound:

  1. Pillar of Islam: Salah is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it a mandatory act of worship for all Muslims to pray five times a day.
  2. Connection with God: Salah establishes a direct link between the worshipper and Allah. Through prayer, Muslims communicate with God, seek His guidance, and express their devotion.
  3. Discipline in Life: Performing Salah five times a day instills discipline and a sense of routine in a Muslim’s life. It helps to organize the day around these spiritual moments, ensuring regular reflection and mindfulness.
  4. Community: Congregational prayers, especially the Friday prayer (Jumu’ah), allowed Muslims to get together in a single place and stay connected. Praying together in mosques reinforces social bonds and the collective identity of the Muslim ummah (community).
  5. Moral and Ethical Development: Prophet PBUH said, ‘Your Prayer will stop you from evil deeds’. Regular prayer encourages Muslims to lead a righteous and ethical life. It gives values such as honesty, patience, and compassion, guiding Muslims to live in accordance with Islamic principles.
  6. Peace: Engaging in Salah provides a sense of inner peace and tranquility. It offers a moment of pause in the daily hustle, allowing Muslims to reflect, seek solace, and find comfort in their faith.
  7. Reminder of Purpose: Salah serves as a constant reminder of the ultimate purpose of life, which is to worship and obey Allah. It helps Muslims stay focused on their spiritual goals and maintain a strong sense of purpose.
